CUP FINAL ANGUISH FOR UNDER SEVENTEENS

DESPITE the high expectations of a good crowd at Grangefield, Wednesday's Under 17 cup final turned out to be a totally one sided affair.

Having won the toss Stockton elected to take the field and were soon under the cosh as Stokesley's openers Goldsmith and Weighall set about establishing a form grip on the game. Both youngsters were firmly in control and helped by some indifferent Stockton bowling led their side to an above par score of 162 in their alloted 20 overs. Whilst Johnny Weighall looked more than useful on his way to 31 it was Will Goldsmith who did the most damage eventually being run out for 99 off the penultimate ball of the innings.

From a Stockton viewpoint their innings got off the worst possible start when skipper Andy Parr edged a delivery from Sam Knock to wicket keeper Robinson after he had made only one. The home sides' hopes now rested firmly on Wilf Reeve and Dave Seymour not only to produce runs but to do so quickly. Reeve, however was caught at cover and Seymour visibly tired having played for Cleveland Schools during the day fell for 8. Deighton and Din soon departed and by the time Tom Coulthard was joined by James Deverall all that was left for Stockton to play for was pride. When the final curtain fell Stockton were 74 runs short with Deverall remaining unbeaten.

Stokesley 162-2 (W Goldsmith 99, J Weighall 31)
Stockton 88-8
(S Knock 4-15)
Stokesley won by 74 runs

MONDAY 29TH JUNE

ALL ROUND BARTON CASTLES BARNIE

Stockton won the toss and put Barnard Castle into bat on a warm sunny evening. Barnard Castle got off to a quick start with 11 off the first over. However Stockton bowler's soon got into their rhythm and managed to restrict the run rate with some accurate bowling. Wickets were taken at regular intervals with notable contributions from Dan Barton with figures of 2 wickets for 9 runs , U Shafiq 1 wicket for 9 runs, Joe Hewison with 1 wicket for 6 runs all off 3 over spells and an excellent run out from M Henry. Despite the quality of the bowling Barnard Castle batsmen H Day made 25 with able support from B Robinson 13 (n.o) and C Brunel 12. Barnard Castle were restricted to 80 for 5 off their 20 overs.

Stockton started their innings in somewhat cooler conditions as the mist descended to obliterate the sun. However, this did not stop Dan Barton from continuing his form with the bat as he made an unbeaten 31 . Despite some thrifty bowling from C Brunel with 0 wickets for 7 runs off 3 overs and J Bowsfield 0 for 22 off 4 overs, C Stewart unbeaten on 15 and Joe Hewison with a quartet of 4's in his unbeaten 20 saw Stockton reach their target with a score of 82 for 0 wicket with over a handful of overs remaining.

Stockton 82 for 0

SEVEN TEENS FAIL TO STOP RICHMONDSHIRE

DESPITE only having seven players due to county calls and transport difficulties the Under 17s managed to make an excellent 141 for two in their alloted overs at Richmondshire. Unfortunately, however their euphoria was short lived as the paucity of fielders weighed heavily against them and the home side cruised home with ten wickets to spare.

Richmondshire 143-0 (T Hodgson 67*, S Wood 58*)
Richmondshire won by 10 wickets

SATURDAY 27TH JUNE

BOUNCED OUT

Parr_ducks

DESPITE having had Durham Academy reeling at 112 for eight Stockton slipped to their seventh defeat of the season at Maiden Castle on Saturday.

Nine out of the ten Stockton wickets to fall were caught and of those Karl Turner, Malintha Gajanayake, Chris Parr, Kevin Ward, Jimmy Ward and Wilf Reeve were all out failing to negotiate short pitched balls from the Academy’s paceman Mark Wood who claimed the six wickets for only 25 runs. Reeve, alone might be exonerated as he failed to avoid a vicious bouncer. Although Gajanayake may well have been the victim of a retaliatory umpiring decision following the controversy surrounding Michael Turns’ dismissal in the Academy innings, his shot selection was far from exemplary. As for the rest they were almost to man caught in the ring trying to pull or hook balls that could easily have been avoided especially baring in mind the required run rate.

Turner and Gajanayake claimed three wickets apiece as the home side collapsed before Mark Davies (46) and Ross Kirtley (29 not out) took them to a respectable 193 for nine declared in 60 overs.

The defeat leaves Stockton marooned at the bottom of the table 26 points adrift of their nearest rivals Newcastle.

Durham Academy 193-9 dec (M Davies 46, R Singh 34, B Raine 31,  M D Gajanayake 3-63, K Turner 3-51, W Reeve 2-13)
