Firsts earn a comfortable draw

ANOTHER encouraging performance by the 1st XI was enough to earn them 11 points from a comfortable draw against Chester le Street at Grangefield. Unfortunately they still remain bottom of the 1st Division but have gained ground on Gateshead Fell and Norton. Half centuries from Richard Thomas (above) and Chris Oliver along with a gutsy display by Mike Wood were sufficient to see off a useful Chester attack. Chris Hooker took four wickets for 78 as Chester le Street posted 252 for 8 declared.
Chester-le-Street 252 for 8 (J. Coxon 83, T. Birbeck 71. C. Hooker 4-78)

Match drawn. Chester-le-Street 16 pts., Stockton 11 pts.

It's all about Mitch

DESPITE a magnificent return of seven for 56 from skipper Richard Waite Stockton slumped to a heavy defeat against South Shields at Grangefield on Saturday. With Mark Davied, their Durham contracted player missing for the third game in succession Stockton had no answer to the fast bowling of Shields' contracted player Mitch Claydon (above). Mixed Fortunes
Stockton's 2007 NEPL campaign began with five wicket loss at home to Tynemouth. Having been asked to bat first on a slow early season pitch the home side reached a respectable 116-2 at lunch. Unfortunately the loss of skipper Richard Waite shortly after lunch heralded a reversal in fortunes culminating in Stockton declaring with the score on 186 for 9 after 61 overs. Despite some tight bowling from Mark Davies and Richard Waite Tynemouth reached their target with five wickets and three overs to spare. To add insult to injury Stockton were deducted a point for failing to reach the required rate of 17 overs per hour.
* Stockton 186 for 9 (R. Waite 36, R. Thomas 39, J. Coates 3-50)
Tynemouth 189 for 5 (M. Cummins 54, B. Stewart 52*, R. Waite 2-61)
Tynemouth won by 5 wickets - Tynemouth 22 pts., Stockton 4 pts.

The following day's visit to Richmond in the Cockspur Cup brought about a change in fortunes with Stockton crusing to a 5 wicket victory against their NYSD opposition. Thanks to some disciplined bowling from Richard Waite (three for 26), Joel Thwaites (two for 18) and youngsters Farook Din and Andrew Parr, Richmond were dismissed for 151. In reply aided by the gift of 42 extras and a well timed unbeaten innings of 23 from Richard Thomas (above) Stockton had little difficulty in reaching their target.
* Richmond 151 (C Layfield 41, R P Waite 3-26, J Thwaites 2-18)
