SECONDS FALL AT THE PENULTIMATE HURDLE

FOLLOWING a creditable winning draw in Saturday's derby against Norton the 2nd XI took on Tynemouth at Grangefield in the semi final of the Banks Bowl. Tynemouth posted 185 for seven in their 45 overs thanks mainly to Hymers (55) and Tony Turner with 41. Stockton then got off to a useful start as Stephen Ward and Chris Parr put on 76 for the first wicket. Unfortunately, despite useful contributions from Dorian Hiles (28) and Jamie McCue (27) the home side were all out still fifteen runs short of their target.

SECOND TEAM THROUGH TO BOWL SEMIS

DESPITE fielding in atrocious weather conditions the 2nd XI defeated Benwell Hill by 10 runs in the Banks Bowl. Thanks mainly to 80 from Chris Parr, Stockton posted a very respectable 153 for six in their allotted 20 overs. Inspite of some clean hits by Kilpatrick (34) and White (58) the visitors finished ten runs short. Stockton now take on Tynemouth at Grangefield on Sunday.

SECONDS MOVE UP TO SECOND

Simon Davison

A FINE win over league leaders South North means that the 2nd XI move up to second place forty one points behind their opponents but with a game in hand. Rob Webster claimed five LBWs in his haul of five for 15 as the visitors were shot out for 149. Simon Davison (three for 39) and Allan Baird (two for 28) played excellent supporting roles. Once skipper Stephen Ward (25) and Chris Parr (65) had departed Stockton suffered a mini collapse as Webster, Phinn, Tunney and Michael Ward all fell cheaply before Simon Davison (above) and Wilf Reeve steadied the ship. Davison was eventually dismissed for 23 when a victory was well within sight.

JAMES SHINES IN THE BELL

James Tompkinson

A FINE all round performance by seventeen year old James Tompkinson (pictured) helped the seconds progress in the James Bell Trophy. Stockton made a good start through Chris Parr (22) and Stephen Ward until the latter had to retire hurt with back injury. From then Stockton lost wickets steadily until firstly Darren Phinn (20) and then James Tompkinson (12 not out) and Michael Rushforth rallied to pull the total to 116 in their alloted overs.

In reply the visitors, South Hetton never looked comfortable and were eventually dismissed for 75 with Tompkinson capping a fine display by taking four for 12.

SECONDS BECOME THIRD

THE SECONDS climbed to third in the league table with a 54 run victory over Chester le Street at Ropery Lane.  Making first use of the wicket they found themselves in trouble despite 30 from Chris Parr in his first game since returning from University. It was eventually left to Simon Davison and Wilf Reeve to perform the rescue act. Davison top scored with 47 out of Stockton’s modest total of 136. 

Jimmy Ward then set about destroying the Chester reply claiming five for 15 from seven overs two of which were maidens. He was reliably supported by Reeve who took three Chester wickets for only six runs as the home side were dismissed for 82.

Monday 27th May

THE SECOND'S suffered a four wicket defeat at home to Tynemouth's second string. Batting first Stockton were dismissed for a below par 137 with veteran seamer Russell Perry claiming four for 17 on behalf of the visitors. Tynemouth were never in total control but despite three for 29 from Dorian Hiles they crossed the line with four wickets to spare.

SECONDS RIGHT ON TRACK

Micheal Ward

A RESOUNDING 70 runs victory over Darlington RA sent Stockton 2nd XI into the next round of the George Coates Trophy. A quickfire 39 by Michael Ward (above) together with Stephen Ward (35) and Richard Tunney (26) meant that Stockton posted a formidable 164 for six in their 20 overs.

The Railwaymen were never really in contention as the in form Allan Baird (three for 17) and Michael Rushforth (three for 18) derailed any challenge they might have offered.

BIG AL BAGS SIX

Allan Baird

VETERAN seamer Allan Baird continued his tremendous early season form as the second XI climbed to fourth in the league following a 52 run victory over a strong Newcastle side at Heaton Park on Saturday. Baird claimed six for 28 as Newcastle were dismissed for 172 in reply to Stockton's 224 for four declared.

Skipper Stephen Ward (78) and youngster Jimmy Ward (92) made the lion's share of the visitors contribution before Baird and leg spinner Michael Rushforth with three for 56 set about demolishing the Newcastle line up.

MASON LEADS SECOND TEAM RUN GLUT

VICE Captain Lee Mason (above) struck a glorious unbeaten 112 as he and Dorian Hiles who also finished unbeaten on 81 plundered a lacklustre South Shields at Grangefield Road on Saturday. Skipper Stephen Ward called a halt to proceedings with the score on 235 for two at the end of the 52nd over but his bowlers failed to capitalise on the opportunity as Shields ended on 156 for six at stumps.

BAIRDY ON SONG

THE SECONDS pulled their home game against Benwell Hill out of the fire after being dismissed for a meagre 88. Richard Tunney with 20 and Allan Baird with 22 being the major contributors whilst Shoaib Khan with four for 24 in 10 overs was the pick of the opposition bowlers. In reply Benwell crumbled to 60 all out as veteran pace bowler Baird claimed seven wickets for only 30 runs in 12 over stint.
