CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT SECURES FIRST WIN

In Stockton’s’ last outing in the Banks Cup of 2008 the young team produced a strong bowling and batting display to beat South Sheilds.  Despite a fraught morning of hastily rearranged travel plans all players arrived in good time despite all drivers getting lost at some point in the journey north, the most notable excursion being James ‘I need a Sat Nav’ Tompkinson's who managed to get lost just after he turned left out of Grangefield, but thanks do go to those who helped out at such short notice.

Stockton fielded first and with a strong bowling performance from the young attack (not forgetting the one very experienced bowler) they restricted South Sheilds to 153 for 8.  All bowlers on the day were very economical and were supported well in the field throughout (well almost throughout – and you know who you were!!) with some excellent fielding.  The three notable performances of the day were Dave Seymour who bowled 10 overs with a return of 2 for 31, Adam Nicholson 5 overs 2 for 19 and Farouk Din 12 overs 3 for 25.

South Shield set about the task of defending the total with some very accurate bowling and as such Stockton got off to a slow start but a determined effort from Jamie Mc Cue (38) and Farouk Din (20) got the run chase back on track. Dave Seymour (43 n/o) gave Stockton’s reply the momentum needed later in the innings with a mixture of strong hitting and good running, a good combination for someone early in is senior career, he was well supported in the run chase by both Ian Richards and Adam Nicholson and allowed Stockton to reach the target with five wickets in hand and 2 over to spare.

South Shields 153 – 8 (G Marshall 30, S Embleton 30,  M Appleton 38*, F Din 3- 25)
Stockton 154 – 5 (J McCue 38, D Seymour 43*)
Stockton won by 5 wkts

THIRDS SHOW VAST IMPROVEMENT

Tom Seymour

DESPITE slipping to a 49 runs deafeat a very young and inexperienced Third XI gave a much improved all round performance against Benwell Hill in the Banks Cup at Grangefield. A side containing no less than nine players aged 17 and under and including two thirteen year olds contained a far more experienced Benwell Hill team to a beatable 203 for nine in their 45 overs.

In reply, the Stockton youngsters showed maturity well beyond their years to get within striking distance of their opponents effort. James McCue (28) and Dave Seymour (pictured) with 31 were the top performers but Adam Nicholson, James Tompkinsom, Tom Coulthard, Phil Appleton, Chris Wiright and James Kendall all played their parts with either the bat or the ball.

Benwell Hill 203-9 (D Hunter 50, R Sarginson 45, J Tompkinson 3-40)
Stockton 154 (D Seymour 31, J Mason 3-43, J Chambers 3-20)
Benwell Hill won by 49 runs
