Stockton Ladies have struck form just as the season, unfortunately, enters its closing stages with six consecutive wins, the Ladies’ hard work in the nets and at practice starting to pay off.

Hosting new side Darlington in a friendly at neutral Maltby CC on Wednesday 5 August, Stockton, playing for the first time in their smart new Vantis sponsored kit, batted first and racked up 146-2 in their 20 overs, Lyndsey Ward 31no and Harley Wilkinson 26 top scoring. In reply, Darlington were always behind the required rate and had no answer to the leg spin of Lauren Kelly, taking 4-8 off 3 overs, with the other wickets going to Sophie Hope 2-12; Helen Appleton 1-8 and Sophie Bendelow 1-15 as the visitors closed on 96-8. Bendelow also took three catches, leaving Stockton victors by 50 runs.

Stockton entertained Chester le Street in the Durham County Women’s Cricket League on Monday 10 August and won by 13 runs to avenge a heavy away defeat earlier in the season. Stockton got off to a slow start with the first three overs being maidens. The loss of Bendelow 10 and Appleton 7 in quick succession effectively became three wickets down when Kelly had to retire hurt.

Stockton’s captain Kirsty Walsh 8 promoted herself up the order and started to throw the bat alongside the in-form Wilkinson 26no and, with late runs also from Ward 7no , a score of 26-1 off 10 overs became 79-3 when the innings closed after 20 overs. Although defending a modest total, the ladies attacked from the off and were rewarded when the dangerous Rachel Hook was run out for 7. Using the basics of line and length, and backed up by some good ground fielding, quick wickets for Appleton 3-10, including skipper Alison Wilson for 13, and Wilkinson 2-12, put Stockton on top and Walsh took the final wicket for Stockton’s first points of the season.
Stockton travelled to Feethams on Wednesday 12 August for the return fixture with Darlington and another won toss saw the ladies bat first. Walsh 27 and Wilkinson 20 top scored for Stockton with wicket-keeper Sarah Robinson 8no and Kelly 7no adding valuable late runs as Stockton ended their 20 overs on 130-4.
Another excellent display in the field brought its reward with Wilkinson 3-20; Kelly 2-14 and Walsh 1-20 having the upper hand over the home batters. Bendelow took another smart close range catch as Stockton closed the game out pretty comfortably, winning by 21 runs as Darlington closed on 109-6.

Stockton returned to Feethams a week later on Wednesday 19 August for a hastily arranged game after the Ladies’ league fixture with Willington was called off. Stockton overcame the loss of Wilkinson to the first ball of the innings to score 134-2 with Caygill 53no and Kelly 19no leading the way.

Darlington put up a great fight, led by Lucy Charlton 37 and Heidi Weir 15no but fell 36 runs short closing on 98-5. The wickets were shared by Hatt 2-7; Wilkinson 1-11; Rachel Layfield-Carroll 1-13 and Caygill also 1-13.

Stockton were grateful to Darlington for stepping in at short notice on Thursday 27 August to replace original opponents Norton who were unable to field a side. Darlington won the toss and inserted Stockton who lost opener Ward to a first over wicket maiden. Fellow opener Kelly 32no and stand in captain Caygill 60no combined to take Stockton to a 20 overs total of 129-1.

Darlington replied with 87-5, Charlton holding the innings together with a fine 42no, in what became very difficult light, and Emily Bonham scoring 11. Ward, though, proved unplayable with 4-8 off 3 overs, Bendelow 1-7 being the other wicket taker as the Ladies won by 42 runs.

Darlington invited Stockton to close their season down at Feethams on Sunday 30 August and the Ladies took first knock . Some wayward bowling restricted Stockton to 98-2 with Caygill 23no and Kelly 18no retired top scoring.
In reply, Charlton with 45no took Darlington close at 90-6 but Stockton kept their nerve and good bowling and fielding saw them win by 8 runs; Ward 2-3; Layfield-Carroll 2-8; Walsh 1-10 and Wilkinson 1-19 taking the wickets.
