UNDER 13S DEMONSTRATE STRENGTH IN DEPTH

Two further Cup wins for the 13s maintained their unbeaten start to the season and propelled them to top spot in their qualifying group.

Norton were the first opponents to be defeated when after being set a target to win of 98 in 20 overs the top order all made impressive contributions to secure a 7 wicket victory with 5 overs to spare. Dan 'Boom Boom' Amin top scored with 26 not out and was ably supported by double digit contributors Ben Stevenson 16, Umar Shafiq 22 and Matty Gill with 16.

Bowling honours to Ross 'Dynamo' Nicholson with 2 for 9 and a good spell of controlled leg spin from 'Boom Boom' saw him take 2 for 17. Other wicket takers were Ben with 1 for 10 and Daniel Stephenson 1 for 14.

Norton 97 for 7 off 20 overs - Stockton 98 for 3 off 14.5 overs. Stockton won by 7 wickets.

In the second game against less accomplished but very enthusiastic opponents, Newton Aycliffe, Dave Parr astutely took the opportunity to give batting practice to those who'd missed out the week before. Rising to the challenge Jack Burns returned to his form of last season to record 26, Josh Sowerby retired having made an undefeated 30 and our singleton Under 11 player, Tom Hewison scored a quick fire 8 at the end for an overall total of 116 for 4 in their 20 overs. None of the top four from the Norton victory were required to bat.

Chasing 117 to win Aycliffe were quickly under the cosh as Umar Shafiq with 1 for 4 and Dan Amin with 2 for 15 took quick early wickets. Then a rejuvenated Luke Swann took centre stage with four wickets for 4 runs leaving Daniel Stephenson 2 for 0 and Tom Hewison 1 for 0 to clean up as their opponents were all out for 34.

Stockton 116 for 4 off 20 overs
Newton Aycliffe 34 all out off 15.2 overs.
Stockton won by 82 runs.

SUNDAY 6TH JUNE

BATSMAN GUIDE UNDER 13s TO NARROW CUP WIN

Sunday the 6th June saw the under 13s begin their Lowery Cup campaign with an away fixture at Darlington RA. Having defeated The Railwaymen in the league only a fortnight ago by 38 runs, confidence was high although on the evidence of the early exchanges perhaps complacency was more in evidence!

Fielding first, a combination of erratic bowling (yielding 34 extras) and uncharacteristicly poor ground fielding allowed RA to blaze away to 65 for 1 after only 10 overs. Fortunately the second half of the innings showed an all round improvement with only 45 conceded from the final ten overs to set the boys a total of 111 for victory. Of the 5 RA wickets to fall bowling honours went to Captain Umar Shafiq with 2 for 9, Ben Stevenson and Callum Stewart also contributed a wicket each. Fielding highlights saw Ross Nicholson swoop low at mid wicket to take a fine catch and Daniel Stephenson played a key role in the only run out of the innings.

In response the batsmen played very responsibly, despite the early loss of the in-form Ben Stevenson, and managed throughout to keep just ahead of the 5.5 runs per over rate needed for victory. Double digit scores were recorded by Matty Gill (20), Dan 'Boom Boom' Amin (24), Ross Nicholson (13) before an undefeated 20 from Callum Stewart guided the team to within 4 of their target with an over to spare. Josh Sowerby then despatched the first ball of the final over to the boundary to secure a 4 wicket victory.

SUNDAY 30TH MAY

UNDER 13S MAINTAIN WINNING START

The Under 13s kept up their 100% record after defeating Norton by 28 runs at an overcast and bitterly cold Grangefield.

Captain Umar Shafiq won his first toss of the season and put the visitors into bat on a wicket that looked lively after Saturday's heavy rainfall. A most uncharacteristic and lethargic performance in the field, including a couple of dropped catches, resulted in Norton not losing a single wicket in their total of 68. Not dissimilar to Phil Brown's infamous verbal blast on the pitch at Maine Road, the usually placid Dave Parr made his anger and frustration known to the team in a mid wicket huddle during the interval!

To their credit, the entire team responded positively to Dave's motivational talk and were clearly fired up as they went out to bat. Chasing 69 to win the first pairing of Ben Stevenson (11) and Umar (10) made the perfect start with an opening partnership of 26. Josh Sowerby and last week's star performer Dan Amin then went after the Norton attack, this time Josh took the honours scoring 20. Jack Burns and Luke Swann added a further 8 before Callum Stewart and Dan Stephenson (10) put on 23 to move Stockton ahead before the final pairing of Matty Gill (10) and Ross Nicholson (12) added a further 22 to leave Stockton victors by 28 runs.

Stockton won by 28 runs.

DAN DESTROYS DARLO WITH DAZZLING DEBUT

Dan Amin

The under 13s continued their winning start start to the season with a relatively comfortable 38 run victory away to Darlington RA. The real bonus for the team was the performance, on debut, of Dan 'Boom Boom' Amin who sent the ball to all corners of the ground in his sparkling innings of 33.

Fielding first the boys put in another well drilled performance taking 9 opposition wickets and restricting RA to 286 for a net score of 214. Skipper Umar Shafiq led the way with 3 wickets for 6 runs, Callum Stewart followed last week's excellent spell finishing with 2 for 2 runs, the remaining wickets went to Matty Gill, Josh Sowerby and Luke Swann who took 1 each. Fielding honours to Josh who took an early catch and Ben Stevenson who bagged a catch and a crucial early run out.

Chasing only 15 for victory the first two pairs amassed 61 without loss ( Umar 11, Ben 8, Josh 5 and Dan with his beligerant 33 including 1 x 6 and 6 x 4s) at which point the team were cruising and under strict instructions to take things easy and ensure wickets were kept intact. Things didn't go quite according to plan! In the next 8 overs 5 wickets fell and the + 61 total had been eroded to only + 42 before Matty steadied the ship at the end scoring 16 to see the team finish on 308 for 7 for a net score of 252 and winning margin of 38.

Batting practice this week for some!

UNDER 13S MAKE WINNING START

After last week's disappointing rain induced abandonment, the Under 13s took to the field at Grangefield against Hartlepool to launch their 2010 campaign.

Under the stewardship of this year's Captain, Umar Shafiq, Stockton fielded first and quickly got amongst the visitors' batting with Josh Sowerby taking two wickets in the 3rd over of the innings. Wickets continued to tumble as the bowling remained tight throughout and the fielding was generally immaculate. Two run outs initiated by Matty Gill increased the pressure on Hartlepool who at the end of their 20 overs had accumulated 65 runs for the loss of 11 wickets for a net score of 177.

Bowling honours to Callum Stewart who quickly found his devastating best line and length to bag 3 for only 4 runs, Umar claimed 2 for 2 and Josh finished with 2 for 1 run.

After the first 4 overs of their reply the game was in the bag after Ben Stevenson launched an early assault to score a rapid fire 20, including 4 text book boundaries. On debut Arran Hadji compiled a very respectable 12 including a sumptuous six over mid wicket off his final ball and Daniel Stephenson showed great composure to add 8. The remaining batsmen played to orders, batting and running sensibly to finish the innings on 305 for 6, net 257 for a convincing margin of victory of 80 runs.

More good news - Parr's Catering Services are up and running again serving a fine selection of bacon and sausage sandwiches and hot drinks. The quality remains as good as ever so please call along any Saturday or Sunday morning, when the Juniors are at home, and enjoy fine dining and competitive sport.
